The voice resonates...a voice one doesn’t hear enough of someone trying to find his place in the world, in his world, trying to figure out life. (How universal can you get...) The moving between times is wonderful - that it is confusing grabs you more and places you along side these characters. Grabs your heart and never lets go. I would put this on the very short list of books that permanently changed the way I write.If you're irritated by sci-fi, fairy tales, and magical realism, you probably won't enjoy it. If you hate Gibran and Tagore, you probably won't enjoy it. If you have no natural curiosity about the world, you probably won't enjoy it. If you hate reading slow, you probably won't enjoy it.But for me, as someone who grew up in 1980s Mississippi just like Laymon did, this book is a revelation. And I would say that even if I *wasn't* specifically looking for an authentically American work of magical realism, which this undeniably is.Highest possible recommendation.
