199 Overall, the quality of writing has increased since the last book. Scenes are given more appropriate detail and don't feel rushed. The plot is well written. This is my favorite book so far.That said, I have some complaints; I waited 3 books just in case I was wrong. My complaint is about the female characters.In this series, strong, admirable females are rarely explored. There was Tracy, the geologist, a smart woman who put in elbow grease to get a read on a daunting situation, and did her best to make sure her team was safe even when she wasn't around; but Tracy was in roughly two chapters and I was disappointed when she was never mentioned again. There's Sam, but we don't get to explore her enough. And Sam's mother, who kept her composure and propped the family up when her own world was falling apart, but she disappeared from the narrative. And there's Michele who went through hardships and still raised a child alone, who again does not appear often enough. I would like to see the author explore these particular women more, and even look into the other women in the books further.Also, the work that the female characters do is really only ever alluded to, with the exception of the brief scene we saw Sam in before her work was destroyed. When I was reading, I felt like the female characters were under-served, as I always had to guess what they were doing or what had happened to them, when, in comparison, I knew exactly what Ford, and Zack, and Chris, and others had been doing to stay productive.Here's hoping for some more girl power in the next one! I'm looking forward to finding out.
